9mobile Remains Under Operational Strain, With No Major Expansion Announcements This Week

Lagos, Nigeria — Despite efforts to stabilise operations and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s highly competitive telecommunications market, 9mobile continues to face significant operational challenges with no new expansion announcements this week.

Once one of Nigeria’s major telecom operators, 9mobile has been battling declining subscriber numbers for several years as it struggled to keep pace with rivals like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the operator lost over 6,000 subscribers in a two‑month spell late last year, as customers ported out in search of better service quality and network reliability.

Highlights of the ongoing operational strain include:

  • Subscriber erosion: The NCC report highlighted continued declines in subscriber numbers late into 2024 and early 2025 — with many customers moving to other networks where coverage and data speeds have consistently been stronger.
  • Network challenges: While 9mobile sought regulatory approval and partnership deals to improve its technical footing, broader infrastructure issues and delayed deployment of roaming services slowed progress.
  • Rebranding and recovery plans: In 2025, 9mobile began an ambitious rebranding to “T2” as part of a broader strategy to modernise its image and business model. However, these initiatives have yet to translate into new products, expanded services, or large‑scale network rollouts in the past week.

In mid‑2025, the company secured a three‑year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria that allows its subscribers to access MTN’s extensive network where its own coverage is weak. Industry analysts viewed this as a needed step toward improving service delivery, but not a direct expansion announcement or major infrastructure investment from 9mobile itself.

Despite management assurances about transformation and service improvements, there have been no fresh announcements this week regarding capacity expansion, new service launches, or strategic partnerships that could signal a departure from its current operational challenges.

Market watchers say that while stabilisation efforts and brand repositioning are underway, 9mobile’s road to meaningful growth still depends on deeper investments in infrastructure, clearer strategic direction, and competitive product offerings — none of which have surfaced in recent public statements. For now, the telecom operator remains under pressure to reverse its fortunes against more robust competitors in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
